Spatial Data Analyst Course (Summer Semester 2023)

The Map and Data Centre (Geography Section, Faculty of Arts, Charles University), which was inaugurated in the last academic year, is currently running the long-awaited Spatial Data Analyst course, which has attracted a dozen applicants from all over the Czech Republic. The first part of the course was focused on Small Data Analysis in the urban environment of Prague. The course participants learned to work with vector data of cadastral areas in ArcGIS Pro, from which they subsequently created maps with cartograms of socio-economic status from two different periods, or an age pyramid graph or a graph of the evolution of the number of inhabitants and houses. The lecturers of the first part of the course were Prof. Martin Ouředníček (Charles University) and Mgr. Jana Podhorská (CSU). The second part of the course dealt with Big Data. The participants tried their hand at the course under the guidance of Dr. Jiří Nemeškal (UK) and Mr. Mgr. Ivo Brýdl (O2 and datacalir.ai) to work with spatial data obtained from the networks of mobile operators, on the basis of which they subsequently analyzed the turnover of people and mobility flows in selected areas of Prague and the Central Bohemian Region. The third part of the course was focused on field research, where participants could learn practical skills in the field of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS). ArcGIS Field Maps technology under the guidance of Dr. Adam Klsák (UK) and open source KoboToolbox technology under the guidance of Dr. Josef Laštovička (UK) were presented. Participants then tried field measurements using these technologies on mobile devices. The third part of the course ended with a demonstration of the section’s drone equipment, including a test flight with a drone under the guidance of Mr. Ing. Participants were introduced to UAV technologies and trained in air traffic safety. Now will follow a theoretical block focused on synthesis, visualization and interpretation of not only spatial data.
